Michael Jackson may have been a legend, but 17-year old Justin Bieber is slowly following in his footsteps, from the kind of frenzy and stampede he brings wherever he goes, to the kind of numbers he racks up when it comes to album and even box office sales.
By a slim margin of $100,000, Bieber outlasts – at least for now – Michael Jackson in the race for having the most successful docu-music-film in US history. Jackson’s “This is It”, which was released months after the King of Pop had passed and features the star’s preparations for his supposedly final tour, raked in $72.1 million according to The Hollywood Reporter, while Bieber’s “Never Say Never”, which is presented in almost the same fashion, kind of like a video diary, took in a hundred thousand dollars more in ticket receipts than the former.
But those are just the figures back home. Overseas, Bieber has no right to brag, well not just yet perhaps, as he still has a very long way to go. In fact, his producers at Paramount are predicting a modest $20 million payday from the movie’s international screenings, and so far, the movie has already made $10.8 million a month after its release. “This is It” raked in $261.2 million worldwide, indeed Bieber’s film has a long way to go.
As for the race for the top grossing documentaries of all time, Box Office Mojo tallies “Never Say Never” at a decent spot at no.3, after “March of the Penguins” outlasted it by $5 million. The top spot goes to “Fahrenheit 9/11” which earned $119.1 million.
